Transitioning from High School to College: What Every Parent Needs to Know

As the school year winds down, high school seniors and their parents are anxiously anticipating the next big step: College. Between shopping for bedding, a mini-fridge and closet organizers, we hope parents will make time to prepare their student for a sometimes difficult transition from high school to college. Learn more from expert author, John Bendt, about how you can prepare your high school junior or senior if you haven’t already.

After all, sending your teen off to college with little or no career path direction increases the probability that he or she will require extra time to complete a four-year degree due to indecision about a major or false starts.

John Bendt, author of A Roadmap to Career Success—25 Tips for College Bound Students, can help parents understand how to support their student obtain a happy, fulfilling and (most importantly) successful college experience. His book covers tips and techniques that many young people should know but don’t. As a result, students are graduating college with no idea on what they want to do for a career, or how to take the first steps in finding a job.

Even as students begin college, parents can still help prepare them for the working world. Consider buying a copy of this book to read with your student. Talk about the book when they’re home over the winter holiday, or send your child a link to our BlogTalkRadio interview with John. Remind your student that while college is also supposed to be fun, their main goal is to develop their talents and passions for a future career.

in New Ways

Since launching our Facebook page last month, we’ve already seen many new fans on our site. If you haven’t yet joined, consider creating a free account today so that you won’t miss out on the latest and greatest PDS information. In March, Parent Driven Schools also became a “Cause” on Facebook. Now you can share your support for our mission by easily showing your Facebook friends how much you support Parent Driven Schools.

Some of the things we share on Facebook include:

  • Easy ways to donate towards our Cause
  • Invitations to The PIT Crew Conversations on BlogTalkRadio
  • Links to useful resources
  • Meeting dates for moms who want to be part of our Street Team
  • Inspiring quotes
  • Ways to connect with other parents who share similar interests and concerns

Here’s one example of what our fans are saying on Facebook:

“After my youngest son was diagnosed with hearing loss we had an IEP put in place with his speech therapist and audiologist (he's still too young to be in school), but I have found it to be a very useful tool. I like that we have a big picture view/goal that we ultimately want to achieve, but that the task doesn't become overwhelming because we attach each area with baby steps. The beauty of this tool is that you can constantly reevaluate and check progress against goal. We evaluate my son’s progress every six months and decide what needs to be added, taken away or fine tuned. As a parent, it makes tackling the long term solution not so overwhelming. Even a child who is doing well in school can benefit because an IEP will given them a specific course of action to reach a goal of improvement." – Sarah Markowski, parent.
